Ordinarily I would have used my favourite paper strathmoreart 500 Series Bristol Plate but I didn't want to waste the paper thinking that the image wouldn't turn out well, but I'm happy with it so far and wish I had of used the 500 now. The highlight will be one of the last things you finish, in all likelihood. When you work on black, every color you apply to the surface will take on some of that darkness. Your softest pencils will be your friends because black paper takes less layers and the soft pencils seem to layer gently, whereas your harder ones might tear the paper after a certain amount of layering. For example, had I made straight edges on the shadows, the ball would have looked flat or lopsided. I love the perspective that this student has chosen and all the detail and variety of tones that they have captured. A kneaded eraser works well to lift the charcoal from the surface in larger areas, while an eraser pencil is better suited for areas that require more precision.

Light, on the other hand, is an active, measurable substance. A is an absence, a lack of light. I'm having mixed feelings about the paintings on black - I must not be doing something 'right' since my drawings are not as bright as on white but maybe I shouldn't expect them to be? I've used Prismacolor on black with okay results as long as the lights have a little white or light yellow as a base. Go slowly and draw smooth layers of color. The reflected light also helps to brighten the right side of the core shadow. Leave some darker areas between rows of feathers. The hardest thing with this for me is remembering that black paper won't take a whole lot of layers. I still decided to submit the drawing anyway. I've had no trouble mixing brands in a piece. Then I layered in more red, and alternated red and yellow to get the brightest, boldest red I could. I have ordered black stonehenge, just because I reviewed many of the black paper wips in the library and found that many of them used black stonehenge. Prismacolors are a great brand and the lighter colors show up especially well on black paper.
